REVIEW: ‘Annie & Oliver’ – The Way Forward Programme

The Way Forward presentation of ANNIE & OLIVER

The evening began with a song from the Rainbow Group. Still quite young and possible future customers of Way Forward, they sang ‘When I Grow Up’ from Matilda, a number that was loved by the audience and a lovely start to what was to be a very special evening.

We began with Oliver, played by Christopher Ayers, in the orphanage run by Mr Bumble. Oliver, with the other children and imagining what they could be eating apart from gruel, sang ‘Food Glorious Food’ and the audience loved it. Oliver eventually escapes the clutches of Mr Bumble and ends up with the Artful Dodger, a bunch of pick-pockets, and – of course – Fagan, played by Garry Jones. The thieves lightening the pockets of passersby during the singing of ‘Pick a Pocket’ was very well done and funny.

We then had Annie, played by Amie Grimwood, in the orphanage with the other girls. Dressed and ready for thedrudgery of their everyday cleaning chores, they were closely watched by Miss Hannigan, played by Emily Bowkis. Annie just wants to find her family and leave the orphanage for good. ‘It’s A Hard Knock Life’ was sung by Annie and the orphan girls and I have to admit that it brought a tear to my eye.

The play progressed with wonderful dancing and singing, and eventually Oliver and Annie both found the happiness they were searching for.  The choice of songs was wonderful and there was plenty of audience participation.

The costumes were excellent, with Olivers pick-pocket friends looking the part…untidy and not too clean! Meanwhile, Miss Hanagan’s girls were dressed and ready for their never ending daily chores.

With narration by Kyle Hollinsworth, this was a really excellent evening and the whole cast were superb, so well done everyone – this was a most enjoyable evening for all.

Don’t just take my word for it – here’s a little feedback from another audience member…

“What a joy. I’ve grinned so much my face aches. I clapped so much my hands hurt and im glad I put waterproof mascara on. Can’t wait for the Christmas show. Fab fab fab!” (Heather Bowley)

Keep your eyes peeled for The Way Forward’s Christmas production!
