PREVIEW: “The Actress” – Bembridge Little Theatre Club

Bembridge Little Theatre Club are known for their talent and their ability to stage fantastic plays that blend humour, pathos and great entertainment. Last November, their production of ‘Lettice and Lovage’ received great feedback, being described as ‘side-splitting comedy gold …. with actresses showing humility and vulnerability with abundance.’ Now another poignant comedy is set to delight audiences at Bembridge Village Hall: ‘The Actress’ by Peter Quilter will be staged from 11th – 13th May at 7.30pm with a Sunday matinee at 2.30pm on the 14th.

Lydia Martin, the actress of the title, is giving her final performance before retiring to be with the new, yet aged and infirm, love of her life. Her ex-husband clearly disapproves – but what of their daughter? Lydia’s agent? Dresser? Theatre manager? They all have their own views, and are not afraid to express them….

Peter Quilter is best known for ‘End of the Rainbow’ which was adapted into the award-winning film ‘Judy’ starring Renee Zellweger. Quilter describes ‘The Actress’ as “A funny and poignant comedy, dramatising the events backstage as a colourful, complicated actress makes her farewell performance, while dealing with unexpected visitors. Drama and comedy collide as people say their goodbyes, declare their love, roar with laughter, spit insults, grab a final embrace, and renew old battles.”

Indeed, The Actress has also had its share of accolades: it has been staged in Brazil, Germany, Bulgaria Canada, Russia, the UK…and now the Isle of Wight! Under the capable and experienced direction of Dianne Aspinall, the cast and crew are busily rehearsing and constructing sets to bring you yet another amazing, hilarious, thought-provoking and entertaining show. BLTC’s recent shows have been sell-out productions and tickets for ‘The Actress’ are selling fast, so get yours now to avoid disappointment.
