PREVIEW: ‘Bedroom Farce’ – Apollo Players

‘Bedroom Farce’ opens at the Apollo Theatre, Newport, Isle of Wight on 2nd February 2024.

Trevor and Susannah, whose marriage is on the rocks, inflict their miseries on their nearest and dearest: three couples whose own relationships are tenuous at best. Taking place sequentially in the three beleaguered couples’ bedrooms during one endless Saturday night of co-dependence and dysfunction, beds, tempers and domestic order are ruffled, leading all the players to an hilariously touching epiphany. Alan Ayckbourn’s clever uses of time and space make this a very intricate and sophisticated comedy while also portraying the deteriorating and rebuilding of relationships among the couples.

Ayckbourn is one of the most prolific and widely performed of living English language playwrights, having written 74 full-length plays, and a highly regarded theatre director. Almost five decades after its world premiere in 1975, Bedroom Farce remains one of the most popular of his plays and it is one of the most frequently produced of his works by both professional and amateur companies in the UK.

Director Gwen Stevens said, ‘You can’t really go wrong with an Ayckbourn, with his wonderfully timed lines and realistic characters.  We all know people just like the characters in his play. It could sound as though all the disasters make a depressing evening’s entertainment, but you will see it is full of laughs from start to finish.’

You can catch ‘Bedroom Farce’ at the Apollo Theatre on 2-10 February (no performances Sunday or Monday).  Book online at www.apollo-theatre.org.uk or ring the box office on (01983) 210010.
