It was the turn of the younger members of TheatreTrain to wow their audience at East Cowes Town Hall, with their one-off musical show, ‘Mad About the Movies’, a compilation songs, dances and theatrical pieces based on some much-loved movie songs, and more…..
Indeed, the first piece was a wonderfully amusing mime by the AM group, based on the actual experience of being at the movies, reacting to the different emotions evoked by what’s on the screen and the accompanying music. By the time it finished, I wanted some popcorn!
The AM and PM juniors along with the ‘Minis’ (the very youngest, some as young as 4 years old) alternated to bring us a great variety of numbers. They all kept up the energy levels and enthusiasm throughout, and there was evidence of a great team spirit and camaraderie onstage.
If I have a criticism it’s that at times some of the voices were drowned out by the backing music, especially when the piece required them to be further upstage – but some of the Minis had that firmly under control as they took over the mics at the front of the stage – they were clearly very determined to be heard!

It would be impossible to pick out individual performers in this amazing ensemble show, but each and every one of them is a star in their own right. Similarly, I can’t pick out a performing team or a number that was ‘the best’ – every piece had its own, very different, charm, and the variety of the items is testament to the hours of hard work and rehearsal put in by the children – and of course the adults who are supporting and guiding them.
I will just say that alongside the first piece, some of my highlights included the Minis’ rendition of the well known book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ complete with actions and lots of noise; the AM group’s interpretation of another favourite book, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and the PM group’s lovely acting and singing in ‘Maybe’ from the musical ‘Annie’. Along of course with the finale of ‘Come Alive’ featuring the whole company.
However, every item on the packed programme showed off the young talent and hard work on the stage – the children, their parents and the adult creatives and supporters should be very proud of what they have achieved. Well done all!
