REVIEW: ‘Matilda Jr’ – Curtain Call Creative

Curtain Call Creative have done it again — the cast of Matilda the Musical Jr delivered an energetic, fast-paced, funny, heartwarming and thoroughly entertaining show.

We all know Matilda’s story: a brilliant, book-loving girl with awful parents, a Headmistress that hates children (especially clever ones), who discovers her powers and finds love and safety with Miss Honey.

Matilda, played by Maisie Walker-Green, was everything you’d hope for and more — she truly stole the show. Her vocals, acting, dancing and storytelling, especially in scenes with Mrs Phelps (a lovely performance by Bali Harris), was a masterclass. Maisie carried the role with confidence, grace and effortless charm. A star in the making!

Dulcie Walker’s Miss Honey was beautifully understated and utterly captivating — an impressive, mature performance.

Freddie Nixon was brilliant as the slippery Mr Wormwood delivering such a confident, funny and polished performance, and Sunshine Lorenz was perfection as his vain, clueless wife. Kieron Mapley’s Michael was wonderfully funny — “Backwards” will never sound the same again!

And Noah Walker-Green’s Miss Trunchbull? One word …  Fab-u-lous!!! He delivered every line with such venom and impeccable comedic timing. His characterisation and stage presence were utterly magnetic and he clearly relished every moment. He certainly gave Maisie a run her money as the star of the show.

The children were sharp, energetic and so well-rehearsed. Special mentions to Imogen Doyle (Hortensia), Megan Dickson (Alice), Rex Jones (Eric), Nell Shipley (Amanda), Charlie Dickson (a charming Bruce with strong vocals), Polly Careless (Lavender), Jake Cross (Nigel), Thomas Dangerfield and Etta Newnham (Escapologist and Acrobat), and Henry Dover (Tommy and a hilarious Rudolpho). The whole ensemble sounded fantastic.

The live band, led by Musical Director Andrew Woodford, delivered a wonderful score that supported the cast beautifully. Vocals were strong throughout — well done to vocal coach Indra Riches.

Directed by Katie Walker-Green, the show was slick and cleverly staged, with smart use of the apron and tabs to keep everything flowing. Jake Alabaster’s high-energy choreography was executed brilliantly by the children — they made it look easy!

A wonderfully entertaining evening. Curtain Call Creative have once again raised the bar.
