This evening I was entertained by students of Cowes Enterprise College with their production of Jason and the Argonauts.
With a minimum set and clever use of props and lighting, they produced a show which proved you don’t always need fancy sets and costumes to engage an audience. Right from the start as they all spoke as the Greek Chorus to introduce Jason’s story I was hooked.
The cast, many playing multiple roles, including monsters were incredible. The play took us from Jason’s birth when he was hidden away from his evil Uncle, through to when he returned to his home as a young man. It was a fascinating journey.
I thoroughly enjoyed the building of the Argo. How, with the use of large pieces of cloth the students created a rocking boat in the storm. The music and lights enhanced this.
Jason, falling under the spell of Medea was beautifully portrayed. The triumphant ending when Medea’s potion put the Dragon to sleep, enabling Jason to take The Golden Fleece was very well done.
These young students gave it their all and deserved the loud applause at the end.
