PREVIEW: ‘The Queer Bash’ – RedTie Theatre

Performed originally for Isle of Wight Pride 2017 and UK Pride 2018, ‘The Queer Bash’ now returns for its third iteration. An original, devised play by Carl Burch for RedTIE Theatre.

‘Queer’ has been a contentious word. For some, it is a reclaimed word – colloquial; a descriptor of identity – taken back from those who used it to inflict harm, discriminate and persecute groups and individuals and transformed into something positive. For others, the word cannot be separated from the heinous way in which it has been used to torment them. Make no mistake, words matter.

The LGBTQ+ community has much to celebrate after decades of fighting to ensure our human rights are protected and respected. Equally, there is ever-growing trepidation and fear.

On both sides of the Atlantic, the socio-political climate is becoming increasingly hostile to the LGBTQ+ community.

The powerful speak with vitriol.

Misinformation spreads unchallenged.

Legislations are being proposed that would see people out of public life.

After several strides in the right direction, progress has turned into regress.

The Queer Bash is an in-depth exploration of the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community today and historical struggles that have never quite dwindled. It is also an unapologetic celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. A brutally honest and colourful emotional rollercoaster that is as funny as it is poignant.

Come to laugh. Come to cry. Come to be entertained.
